Homemade Playdough

For Christmas Amelia got some Play-Doh and she loves it so I thought I would give it go and make some myself. It’s really easy to do, really quick and makes lots!

Thought I would share the recipe with you guys in case anyone wanted to try it:

IMG_5225

The  only cream of tartar I found was in sachets and one sachet seemed to do the job for each lot! I got a bit carried away and made 3 colours, but I love how bright they came out.  (This recipe makes one ball shown above!)

  1. Put all ingredients in a saucepan and stir until combined add choice of food colouring.
  2. Put over the heat and keep stirring until you feel the texture change.
  3. Take off the heat and keep stirring until one big lump attached to spoon.
  4. It will be quite sticky so you’ll need to work it with your hands until it isn’t.
  5. Store until cool for use – always keep air-tight so it doesn’t dry up!

There are lots of different ways of making playdough you can do it just by adding boiling water which might save on washing up! You can also use wholegrain flour for a different texture, glycerine to give it a shine, glitter for fun, or different scents and if you use self raising flour it makes it super stretchy!!

The only down-side is you don’t get the amazing smell of shop bought play-doh (or is that just me?!)

Hope this is useful and thanks for reading!xx

Mini Me

Last week I posted a photo of Amelia and myself on Instagram and it got a big response of people saying how alike we looked and how you could really see it even more with our faces side by side like this;

IMG_4557

I think our eyes and nose are very similar and maybe mouth but its hard to tell because of the size difference. But I do think that this is a definite mini me!

I have always said Amelia has looked like me and looks like me when I was a baby so I did a bit of digging around in the photo albums to see if I could find any similar ones.

From looking at old photos I’ve learned that I had more hair than Amelia and I look a bit chunkier although I remember comparing our red books and for the first few months of life we pretty much weighed exactly the same too…weird eh?! My Mum and Dad quite often say how similar Amelia is to me looks and personality wise. Anyway have a look at these pictures let me know what you think.

They are taken at around similar ages. Me as a baby is on the left in pictures and Amelia on the right.

I think we look less alike as tiny babies but really similar between the first year of life. It’s hard to tell comparing the most recent as it would have been around August time for me as a baby so my hair was blonder due to the summer but still think our faces are pretty similar!!

Is your baby a double of you?

Lollipop Lane – Baby Bedding Mad!

Pumpkin & Popsicle Mobile

For me choosing baby bedding was one of the most stressful things ever! I spent hours scrolling through websites and walking round baby shops looking at cot bedding. I initially thought I wanted something pink as I knew I was having a girl but really struggled to find any pink themes that I liked. A lot of bedding has huge characters all over it which I wasn’t a particular fan of! I wanted a set with a colour theme and the cheapest way of doing this was getting a bundle which would come with a cot bumper, blanket and sheets etc or some other compilation of cot bits.

Anyway it actually really started to get on my nerves that I couldn’t get what I wanted until I found Lollipop Lane. My only issue was that I couldn’t see it in the flesh but I fell in love with the ‘Pumpkin and Popsicle’ set which is a mixture of creams, vanillas, yellows and a hit of pink running through to brighten it up. I thought this was perfect a nice neutral theme which fits bed-time perfectly!

I went ahead and ordered;

  • A bundle that included; cot mobile, fleece blanket and duvet
  • Knitted blanket that matched the theme
  • 2x 1.5tog sleeping bags.
  • 4x lemon Jersey Fitted sheets in Lemon

I was so excited when this set arrived and couldn’t wait to get it on the cot and see what it looked like. Its brilliant because although not using the duvet at the moment I’ve got it for when Amelia gets bigger; which with a lot of the sets I looked at I wouldn’t have got. I managed to ordered the Pumpkin and Popsicle set when they had a particular offer on and got a further discount at the checkout with a code which brought it down to such a reasonable price for everything I was getting.

I’ve noticed Lollipop Lane do lots of offers and discounts which is such a plus for this website!

I was super happy with the delivery all came neatly boxed and packaged and really quick and I received a text message on the day saying roughly what time it was due to come. It fits perfectly in the room its such a neutral space just right for bedtime not bright things in Amelia’s face. I love having the mobile to match it just finishes the collection perfectly.

I get so many comments about the knitted blanket that came with the set people asking if I knitted it, ha are you for real! However, I did knit a blanket (slightly unfinished) but no-where near as good as this! I love having the fleece blanket as a pram blanket, its so sweet with the colours, the large knit style and the knitted motifs at the bottom.

When I was looking into bedding I came across the sleeping bag idea and there are a lot of mixed reviews about them but I bought a couple with this bedding set just in case I decided to use them. Anyway they have been a serious god-send. Even from newborn Amelia would kick the blankets off, even when I was getting up to do the night feeds I would wake up after a couple of hours to no blanket being there! Once Amelia hit the appropriate weight to be able to go in them and when her head was big enough to to slip down into the head hole I started using them. Haven’t had night out of them. Got some slightly bigger tog (2.5tog) for the colder nights but they are great. A really good way to begin a night-time routine too. During Amelia’s last feed she goes into her sleeping bag almost as though she knows its soon to be bed time! No-more kicking off blankets when she is in a sleeping bag and they keep her super toasty especially in the cold winter nights we are now facing. Would definitely recommend these to anyone!

I could have chosen any of the sets off of Lollipop Lane; they are so sweet and do excellent bundles; would seriously recommend this to any mums to be looking for a cot theme. You can continue with lights curtain tabs and changing mats too if you want the nursery to contain the entire theme.

To sum up I highly recommend Lollipop Lane bedding to anyone the quality is fab and hasn’t even begun to fade after numerous washing so pleased with my set!

Thanks Lollipop Lane!

Why I blog?

Blogging had never been something I had even considered until my best friend Ellie suggested it. She said you should start a blog about products you like and share things about being a mum that you wanted to know when you were pregnant but didn’t know where to look. So I thought I would give it a go. I looked into wordpress and blogspot and tried blogspot but couldn’t figure it out and preferred the themes on wordpress so went with that.

Since then the last couple of months have really opened my eyes into the world of mummy and daddy bloggers and the community they have going. I wish I had known about it all during my pregnancy (probably didn’t look hard enough). The thing is bloggers – the ones I’ve come across are such nice people and really want to help newbies out which is so lovely.

Now blogging has changed a bit for me it’s such a great way to battle the loneliness of being with a newborn. I mean Amelia is amazing don’t get me wrong but in between sterilising bottles and attempting to keep tidy she is asleep for periods of the day and typing up a blog or reading someone else’s who is in a similar situation or going through something I’ve got to look forward to really doesn’t make you feel so alone. Mummy and daddy blogging is huge and for any mums to be who have questions I’m pretty certain you could find the answer 100 times over with a different life story if you looked into blogs.

I’m hoping to maybe inspire but if not just give someone an inkling of hope that being a young mum isn’t “not another teen mum” but is something to be excited about and maybe someone somewhere will read a post and think oh I can try that or get an idea from it. A new mum or mum to be might read a product review I’ve done in helping them pick out all the things a baby needs from the vast choice we have. And if all that fails I guess I’ve got a diary of memories and thoughts since having Amelia!

A big thank you to Ellie you’ve been amazing and this idea is too!

My views are increasing so hopefully someone will get something from this blog. X

Why EVERYONE should have my Changing Bag!

Storksak-Nina-Antalya Grey

This is the Storksak Nina in Antalya Grey and the changing bag I have! This was given to me as a gift at my baby shower from my sister and has been my absolute life savoir! I had looked at a few changing bags myself and wasn’t sure what I fancied, had looked into potentially a Cath Kidston one simply for the design but didn’t know too much about them (then was put off by a few bad reviews). Anyway my sister got to work and researched and found this one to be one of the best ones!

Its brilliant having a changing bag that is referred to as a ‘Designer Changing Bag’ (fancy eh?!)

It is absolutely great because of the simplicity of the grey colour and the unique pattern on the bag. It goes brilliantly with any outfit I’m wearing the pram I’ve got !

inside-13856-0-1371147230000

The bag itself is made from a wipe clean material and is seriously practical! It has (quickly counting) 7 different compartments and a special zipped pocket for important items! The shoulder strap is completely adjustable and the wipe clean material continues throughout the inside of the bag, which is great for any spillages etc. It has straps that fit onto the stroller so it sort of clips on and doesn’t fall off! I usually just clip it onto the pram so I can get to the bag and have both hands on the handle of the pram.

storksak-nina-antalya-grey[2]

This bag also comes with additional accesories called ‘Snackysak’ food safe insulation to keep larger items warm or cool for up to four hours. It can be stored inside the bag and clips on with its poppers! The bag also came with a changing mat, nothing fancy but is padded and does everything it needs to and folds up so tiny it just slots into the bag!!

storksak_Nina_Antalya_grey

Important things to know:

  • Dimensions: H 28cm W 37cm (excluding pockets) D 12.5cm
  • Multi pocketed style made from durable PU with a wipe clean finish
  • Large outer pocket with a feature magnetic closure
  • Chunky silver rings and hardware and an adjustable shoulder strap
  • Built in stroller clips
  • Thermo-insulated bottle holder will keep fluids warm or cool for up to four hours depending on external temperature
  • Padded changing mat and wipe clean linings throughout
  • Features the handy Snackysak to keep larger items insulated
  • Weight: 1kg

nina_antalya_grey_detail

The bag is just great, such a unique simple design and looks classy with the metal magnet clasp on the front. I’ve not met anyone with the same bag as me which I like and I don’t think I will ever want or need a new one. It still looks basically brand new proving the durability of the fabric its made of and the wipe clean means it looks sparkly new each time I step out.  Don’t step out the house without it and is so easy to keep tidy with all the different compartments!

To anyone looking for a bag yes a little bit more expensive that some others but definitely worth it I’m nearly 4 months in and have nothing bad to say about it. A new mum definite MUST HAVE!!

10/10 from me and a 10/10 from Amelia because with this bag I never forget a thing!!!

Notes from the designer:

“The Nina made her first appearance for Spring/Summer ’12, and quickly became one of our best sellers. We like to think of the Nina as our quirkiest bag, with a fun personality! Great value for money, this style features original Storksak prints and the new Snackysak – an extra, insulated food bag, which makes her ideal for trips to the park. The Nina is spacious, spill proof and comes with built in strollerstraps for extra practicality”

First Christmas Party of the Season…

Today was my first Christmas party of 2013…the under1’s club Christmas Party.

Still a party though!

Me and Amelia, well mainly me, no just me made some cakes with us to take to the party. I like to use the Hummingbird Bakery recipe for vanilla cupcakes and buttercream frosting so we set to work to do those yesterday.

Baking Necessities

Baking Necessities

Obviously I was baking alone and Amelia sat in her little seat on the table watching/crying/sleeping. Had to do a kind of elaborate baking method that involved a lot more moving around a bit of singing and showing Amelia the ingredients to take her mind of the fact that she did not want to be sat in her chair. Eventually I bored her so much she fell asleep. Baked the cakes and left them to cool then decorated them with what was meant to be red icing that went pink-ish and some silver balls and little holly leaves. Sadly I didn’t take a picture of the finished product before they were munched down at the party today.

Baking became my “thing” I guess a couple of years ago, probably the time I got the Hummingbird book. I love baking not so much for the eating of the cakes but I love decorating them and making the frosting to go on top etc. I don’t like to just bake cakes like to do other deserts, bakes and treats; a family fave is key-lime pie. As you can probably guess The Great British Bake Off is one of my fave tv shows!! *cry* its over! So since having Amelia I haven’t had the time to do as much baking as I’d like too but looking forward to being able to make things like cakes etc for occasions such as parties!

We both got ready for the party I dressed Amelia in a little jumper dress and pink tights (from Sainsbury’s)  as she was allowed her Pavlik harness off for 8 hours today. You may have seen in my previous posts that Amelia has shallow hips so she has been in a soft-fitting harness to encourage the ball into the socket for 16 weeks. We have started the weening process with it so starting today she was out of it for 8 hours which is so exciting!

Everyone had brought some bits to nibble on; bread sticks, crisps, flapjacks and of course my cakes and we all sat around and did lots of christmassy songs. The nursery nurse who runs the under1s session brought some little reindeer finger puppets which Amelia absolutely loved she was going crazy trying to grab it off my hand (great news considering I bought a finger puppet book as a Christmas present). We also played with a bubble machine, some little maracas and some bells with Christmas music in the background.

Felt really weird saying to the mums like have a good Christmas see you in the New Year, feels far to early to be saying all that but that is our last session before Christmas! Its such a nice atmosphere at under1’s because everyone who is there wants to be there; everyone talks about not only their baby but they are genuinely interested to listen to what you have to say in the hope of gaining any tips for themselves.

First party of the Winter 2013 Season gets a 10/10 from me and definitely a 10/10 from Amelia.

‘TEEN MOM’

20131127-140959.jpg

Okay so I’m 19 years old making me a teen mum as such but not necessarily a teen mum in the sense many will think. The MTV show teen mom and sixteen and pregnant are shows that look into the lives of 16 year olds who are pregnant and then follows some of them for the first few years of their baby’s lives. I am not out for controversy here just think many people are quite narrow minded about how mature some teenagers can be. Instead of referring to myself as a teen mum I think I would rather be a young mum. I lived away from home for a year whilst doing my first year of university and have a clear direction of where I want my life to go. I am capable of looking after myself and definitely proved I am capable of looking after Amelia. It has not been easy and getting past the fear of what others are thinking when they see a young mum was probably the hardest.

I will be the first to admit I loved watching teen mom and programmes just like that but I think until I got pregnant my own mindset on younger parents was that of what people probably think when they look at me. My health visitor was the one who gave me the biggest inside when I was telling her I was worried about what people think of me and she said do you know what people are so busy with their own lives that they don’t really care and probably aren’t looking at you thinking what’s your story why have you got a baby. This gave me the confidence to go to under1s club and baby groups where all the mums no matter what age are absolutely lovely.

I can admit some younger mums maybe aren’t ready to have children and could do a better job if they were a bit older but I’m so happy having Amelia now and being my age. I can take opportunities and be fully involved with her life. I’m not in a career yet and going back to university part time will still mean I will have tonnes of time with Amelia for her first few years of life. And then when she starts school at age four hopefully I will have graduated by then and be able to get a job. It’s almost perfect timing that we will be starting the next step of our lives together.

I think people need to get past the prejudice of young mums. I appreciate that there are some stories that don’t help ‘us’ younger parents but most of us are doing a really good job whilst facing the wandering eyes of some naive people. Being a young mum myself has given me a new respect for those younger mums out there especially those doing it alone for a vast majority of reasons. It is difficult because I’m at a different stage in my life to my friends but they’ve been so supportive. I don’t think you realise or can understand young mums until you are one or are in contact with one. We can be more grown up and ready to be a mum than some older parents out there.

My life has changed but not stopped since having Amelia. I’ve never been so busy and I can’t wait to get even busier as she gets older. I can’t think that I would be doing much different than what I am if I was ten, fifteen, twenty years older than I am now. Maybe I would feel ‘ready’ or ‘more grown up’ but really I think that’s rubbish.

Right here, right now I am the perfect age to be the mum I want to be.

Time flies…

So in just 3 days Amelia will be 12 weeks old. It has absolutely flown by but at the same time I can’t imagine life without her! It has been a crazy 12 weeks, I’ve been so so busy seeing friends, going to under1s club, hospital trips, shopping and just getting to know my little one.

Amelia was a breech baby so she was booked in for a routine hip scan at 6 weeks; her hips were found to be shallow (hip dysplasia) so she has to were a Pavlik harness. It’s a fabric harness that pushes her hips into basically a frog position to encourage the ball to lock into the socket. Probably not speaking correct technical language at all but makes sense to me haha. She has it on for 16 weeks first 6 weeks permanently, not allowed off at all. Have to dress her around it and not allowed to bath her!! But from week 7 it begins to get weaned off, cannot wait to give her a bath again fed up of sponge bathing around her harness and then by mid December she only wears it during he night. So it’s not so bad and fingers crossed it should work and not need any further treatment. We have weekly scans and physiotherapy which are really good to keep an eye on progress and development.

So that’s one part of our busy weeks. We also go to the under1s club every other week which is run by the nursery nurse and the health visitor team. It’s really good and is usual on a particular topic; we’ve done weaning, safety and sleeping and will be doing some Christmas bits nearer the time. It’s so nice to go there every couple of weeks to see all the other mums! And it’s so good to see babies and complete different ages from newborn to 1 to see the different stages that Amelia is going to go through 🙂 so cute. Although the last session Amelia slept through the entire thing haha.

The week that I don’t have under1s club I take Amelia to the children’s clinic to get her weighed. I like to keep track of that in her red book and it’s a nice walk there and back each week, usually get to briefly chat to some other mums and ask the health visitors any questions I have about Amelia.

Even though most of my friends have gone back to university I’ve still been seeing them loads. Mostly someone has been home every weekend or odd days during the week. And they are always so excited to see Amelia (and me…maybe haha). So lovely that I’m still keeping in touch with them all. And the girls that haven’t gone to Uni that are here I see quite a lot too which also keeps me busy during the week :).

My sister who lives in London has been coming back like once a month to see her niece and she’s home this weekend which I can’t wait for. Always nice to see her although every time she comes back she thinks Amelia’s massive because she’s grown and to her it looks so much more of a difference to her.

Amelia’s doing great though she isn’t remotely bothered by the little harness and she’s growing as she should be; weighs 12pounds now! I’m having the most amazing time being a mum looking back the first month seems a complete blur but I think I’m starting to get the hang of things. Amelia is sleeping from about 11-7 which is such a luxury after the first couple of months of a serious lack of sleep! And I’m just loving every day getting to know her more and more and watching her grow. It’s so exciting and just loving it!!!!
